Aveterra’s Developing Nations Outreach programs are focused on improving health, water quality, soils, and crop yields and reducing poor water-quality and waste-management-related issues in remote and underserved communities.
PARTNERSHIPS:
Our first two initiatives are with NGO partner Hoja Nueva, a 501(C) (3), and are underway in Peru and Ethiopia.
Aveterra and Hoja Nueva are working with government and local community representatives in Peru and Ethiopia to deliver composting and recycling solutions as part of an effort to divert waste from local trash piles to protect local water resources. Aveterra partners are collecting and composting local organic waste and returning rich compost to farmers to replenish soils and increase crop yield.
RESULTS:
The benefits of this project can be measured in several ways. For example:*
• Savings related to reduced health care needs → up to $135 USD annually (WHO)
• Savings related to productive time lost to disease → up to 30% of income (World Bank)
• Increased life expectancy → 16-19 years (WASH study – Peru)
• Improved health associated with addressing diarrheal diseases through clean water and proper waste disposal
Additional project benefits include:
• Job creation
• Improved recyclables market
• Increased crop yield and income through improved soil
• Increased tax revenue
